What will you change by buying a cow?
Pro Milk Mali aims to create an example farm in Mali in collaboration with the small-scale dairy DJOM KOSSAM. One part of this objective is to expand the cowherd. We aim to buy new cows with higher milk production to increase the overall productivity of the farm. We employ farmers and train them to keep cows in the best possible conditions for milk production. As a result, we expect a significant increase in milk production per cow. These experience and knowhow will be transferred to local farmers.
We hope that with these skills, local farmers can run more efficient and more profitable dairy farms. This could trigger that more people get interested in the local dairy sector and more local employment would be generated. In a next step the local dairy sector would be strengthened and more local milk would be available in the market. A higher availability of local milk could reduce the dependency on imports of milk powder. In addition to that an increased availability of local milk could help to improve local nutrition, as milk is an important protein source in the Malian diet.
You will help DJOM KOSSAM, the small-scale dairy, to produce more milk by participating to buy a cow. In the long run, all experience gained in creating a dairy farm with high milk productivity will contribute to the long-term success of the Malian agriculture industry.
What breed of the cow will be bought?
Your sponsorship will be used to buy a crossbreed Holstein/Zebu cow. This particular crossbreed has well adapted to the local conditions and achieves higher milk productivity than a local Malian breed. A crossbreed Holstein/Zebu cow costs in Mali currently CHF 1’250.
